Income tax calculation on ₹15 lakh
Taxable income is ₹13,11,533 after the standard deduction of ₹75,000 and after removing employer PF and the gratuity provision from CTC. Slab tax works out to ₹76,730, plus ₹3,069 of health and education cess. Estimated total tax: ₹79,799 — an effective 5.8% of gross salary.
| Slab | Rate | Tax |
|---|---|---|
| ₹0 – ₹4,00,000 | 0% | ₹0 |
| ₹4,00,000 – ₹8,00,000 | 5% | ₹20,000 |

PF, gratuity and fixed versus variable pay
With basic pay at ₹6,75,000 (50% of fixed pay), employee PF is ₹81,000 a year and employer PF is the same. The gratuity provision of ₹32,467 sits inside CTC and becomes payable only after five years of service. Of the ₹15,00,000 CTC, ₹13,50,000 is fixed and ₹1,50,000 is variable pay that is paid on its own cycle rather than monthly.
₹15 LPA is a widely quoted band for engineers with five to eight years of experience, product managers at their first PM role, and senior analysts in consulting and finance. A 10% variable target is standard; some offers push it to 20% with a matching reduction in fixed pay.
Old versus new tax regime at ₹15 lakh
At ₹15 lakh the rebate no longer applies, so the comparison is a genuine calculation. The new regime's higher standard deduction and wider slabs usually win unless you claim large HRA, home loan interest and 80C deductions together.
| Measure | New regime | Old regime |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated annual tax | ₹79,799 | ₹1,96,726 |
| Estimated monthly in-hand | ₹1,01,944 | ₹92,201 |
The old-regime figures above assume only the standard deduction and employee PF. Adding HRA, home loan interest or 80C investments would reduce old-regime tax further, so use the calculator with your actual deductions before choosing a regime.
Factors that affect your in-hand salary at this level
- A ₹15 lakh CTC with 20% variable has roughly ₹1.5 lakh less fixed pay per year than one with 10% variable — around ₹12,500 a month before tax.
- Employer NPS contributions under 80CCD(2) remain deductible in the new regime and can reduce taxable income without changing your total package.
- Because income tax is now the biggest deduction, submit your regime choice to payroll early in the financial year to avoid front-loaded TDS.
How to calculate take-home salary yourself
- Start with annual CTC and split it into fixed pay and variable pay.
- Remove employer PF and the gratuity provision — both are inside CTC but not paid to you.
- Apply the standard deduction to arrive at taxable income, then apply the slab rates, rebate, surcharge and cess for your regime.
- Subtract employee PF, income tax, professional tax and any payroll recoveries from gross salary.
- Divide by twelve for the monthly figure, remembering that variable pay arrives separately.
