PF, gratuity and fixed versus variable pay

With basic pay at ₹10,62,500 (50% of fixed pay), employee PF is ₹1,27,500 a year and employer PF is the same. The gratuity provision of ₹51,106 sits inside CTC and becomes payable only after five years of service. Of the ₹25,00,000 CTC, ₹21,25,000 is fixed and ₹3,75,000 is variable pay that is paid on its own cycle rather than monthly.

₹25 LPA maps to engineering managers, senior product managers, and specialist roles in data, security and finance. Offers at this level are often quoted as fixed plus variable plus equity, with equity outside CTC.

Old versus new tax regime at ₹25 lakh

The new regime is usually better, but the gap narrows for people with a large home loan. Because the marginal rate is 30% plus cess, every deduction you can legitimately claim is worth about ₹31 per ₹100 claimed.

Regime comparison
MeasureNew regimeOld regime
Estimated annual tax₹2,72,062₹4,73,895
Estimated monthly in-hand₹1,59,953₹1,43,133

The old-regime figures above assume only the standard deduction and employee PF. Adding HRA, home loan interest or 80C investments would reduce old-regime tax further, so use the calculator with your actual deductions before choosing a regime.

Factors that affect your in-hand salary at this level

  • Employer NPS under 80CCD(2) is one of the few deductions available in the new regime and is most valuable exactly at this marginal rate.
  • Ask for a written variable payout history for your function before assuming your target bonus is reliable income.
  • Track your advance tax if you have income outside salary — payroll TDS alone may not cover it.

How to calculate take-home salary yourself

  1. Start with annual CTC and split it into fixed pay and variable pay.
  2. Remove employer PF and the gratuity provision — both are inside CTC but not paid to you.
  3. Apply the standard deduction to arrive at taxable income, then apply the slab rates, rebate, surcharge and cess for your regime.
  4. Subtract employee PF, income tax, professional tax and any payroll recoveries from gross salary.
  5. Divide by twelve for the monthly figure, remembering that variable pay arrives separately.
