Fixed Pay vs Variable Pay
One of the most important things to understand in a job offer is the difference between fixed salary and variable salary.
Two companies can offer the same CTC while giving you very different guaranteed compensation.
What is fixed pay?
Fixed pay is the portion of your compensation that is generally predetermined and paid as part of your regular salary, subject to the terms of your employment. It can include basic salary, HRA, fixed allowances and other fixed components.
What is variable pay?
Variable pay depends on performance or predefined conditions. Examples include sales incentives, performance bonuses, annual bonuses, target incentives and commission.
Example
| Company | CTC | Fixed | Variable |
|---|---|---|---|
| Company A | ₹15 LPA | ₹13 LPA | ₹2 LPA |
| Company B | ₹15 LPA | ₹10 LPA | ₹5 LPA |
The CTC is identical. The compensation structure isn't.
Which is better?
Generally, higher fixed compensation gives you greater predictability. But variable compensation can be attractive when targets are realistic, payout history is strong, incentives are uncapped, you have control over the outcomes and the upside is substantial.
Questions to ask HR
- What determines the payout?
- What percentage of employees achieve targets?
- How often is it paid?
- Is there a cap?
- What happens if targets change?
- Is it discretionary?
- Is it included in monthly salary?
- What happened to the previous year's payout?
