The toughest negotiator I have faced taught me what closing really is

I closed the biggest deal of my quarter against a genuinely tough negotiator. The lesson wasn't about winning — it was about solving. Notes from an AE at TrueFan AI.

Just closed an annual contract — the biggest deal of the quarter for me.

The person on the other side was a genuinely tough negotiator. Every clause questioned, every number pushed.

Somewhere in the back-and-forth I realized: that toughness wasn't the obstacle, it was the point. Someone who pushes that hard isn't trying to walk away — they're making sure that when they say yes, they can defend it internally for the entire tenure they are signing.

So I stopped trying to "win" the negotiation and started trying to solve it. Patience over pressure. Understanding their version of a good deal, not just mine.

A few tense rounds. A few concessions that stung. But that's what a real partnership costs.

Still early in my journey as an AE at TrueFan AI, but this one taught me more about being a closer than any deck ever could: the job isn't to get the best terms for your side, it's to make sure both sides walk away actually wanting to work together.

What's the toughest negotiation you've sat through this year?
