Salary benchmarks
What Is a Good Salary for Freshers in India?
For a fresher, the best first salary isn't necessarily the highest number on the offer letter.
Your first job should be evaluated across salary + learning + role quality + company + career growth.
What salary should a fresher expect?
There is no single national salary benchmark that applies to every graduate. A fresher's compensation can vary substantially based on:
- Degree
- College
- Location
- Industry
- Role
- Technical skills
- Internship experience
- Company
- Hiring demand
A software engineering role, sales role, operations role and design role can have very different starting salaries.
How to evaluate a fresher offer
Suppose you receive two offers:
| Offer | CTC | What else |
|---|---|---|
| Offer A | ₹5 LPA | Strong brand, good mentorship, relevant role, strong learning |
| Offer B | ₹6.5 LPA | Poor role fit, high variable component, limited learning, weak growth path |
Offer B isn't automatically better.
What should a fresher check?
Before accepting, ask:
- What is the fixed salary?
- What is variable?
- What is the probation period?
- Is there a bond?
- What is the notice period?
- Is training paid?
- How often are salaries reviewed?
- What does the actual job involve?
- Who will manage me?
- What skills will I develop?
Check what a typical fresher CTC pays each month after PF and professional tax.

Don't treat your first CTC as a permanent label. A fresher who develops valuable skills can potentially move into higher-paying roles much faster than someone who simply stays in the same job. Focus on building domain expertise, communication, technical skills, problem-solving, business understanding and measurable achievements.
The right question
Instead of "Is ₹X LPA a good fresher salary?", ask "Will this job make me significantly more valuable 12–24 months from now?"
