What Is a Good Salary in India?

There is no single salary that qualifies as "good" for everyone in India.

A ₹10 LPA salary can be excellent for one person and inadequate for another depending on city, family responsibilities, experience, industry, job role, housing costs, debt, lifestyle and career trajectory.

The better question is: is my salary competitive for my experience, role and location?

Think in salary bands

Instead of obsessing over one number, compare yourself against:

  • Entry-level compensation
  • Median compensation for your role
  • Upper-quartile compensation
  • High-end compensation for your skill set

A professional earning ₹12 LPA may be highly paid in one role and below market in another.

CTC isn't the same as take-home salary

If someone says "I earn ₹15 LPA", you still don't know their monthly bank credit. CTC may include:

  • Basic salary
  • HRA
  • Allowances
  • Employee and employer PF
  • Gratuity
  • Variable pay
  • Bonuses
  • Insurance

See what different CTC levels actually pay each month, from ₹5 lakh to ₹50 lakh.

What makes a salary "good"?

Financial stability

You can comfortably manage essential expenses and build savings.

Career growth

Your compensation is increasing as your skills and responsibilities increase.

Market competitiveness

Your pay isn't significantly below comparable roles.

Future optionality

Your role gives you experience and skills that can improve your future earning potential.

Salary isn't the only measure of career progress

Someone earning ₹10 LPA in a role with strong learning and growth may be in a better position five years later than someone earning ₹14 LPA in a stagnant role. Look at salary + skills + responsibility + brand + network + growth rather than salary alone.
