How Much Salary Should I Ask For?
The right salary to ask for depends on your market value, not simply your current salary.
A better question than "What percentage hike should I ask for?" is: "What is a fair compensation range for the value I can bring to this role?"
Use the three-number method
Before talking to HR, calculate:
- 1Walk-away number — the minimum you would accept.
- 2Target number — the compensation you actually want.
- 3Negotiation number — the higher number you initially communicate.
For example, on a current CTC of ₹8 LPA you might decide:
| Number | Example |
|---|---|
| Minimum | ₹10 LPA |
| Target | ₹11.5 LPA |
| Ask | ₹12.5 LPA |
The exact numbers should depend on your market research and circumstances.
Factors that determine your salary expectation
Experience
Two people with the same job title can have very different market values depending on their experience and responsibilities.
Skills
Specialised, difficult-to-hire skills can increase your negotiating position.
Current compensation
Your current CTC is relevant, but it shouldn't be the only benchmark.
Role
A larger scope can justify a significant compensation difference even when the title looks similar.
Company
A startup, multinational, growth-stage company and established enterprise may structure compensation very differently.
Location
Compensation can differ significantly between cities and remote roles.
Should you ask for a 20%, 30% or 50% hike?
There is no universal "correct" percentage.
Instead, calculate the target compensation for the new role and then see what percentage increase that represents.
Salary hike % = (New CTC − Current CTC) ÷ Current CTC × 100

Instead of: "I want a 40% hike."
"Based on my experience, the responsibilities of this position and the market range I'm seeing for similar roles, I'm targeting ₹X–₹Y LPA."
This sounds more professional and keeps the conversation focused on the role.
Don't forget fixed vs variable
A ₹15 LPA CTC with ₹12 LPA fixed is fundamentally different from ₹15 LPA with ₹8 LPA fixed and ₹7 LPA variable. Before accepting, calculate your fixed salary, then gross salary, then estimated in-hand salary — and compare the complete package.
