How Much Salary Hike Should You Expect When Switching Jobs?
There is no universal percentage that every employee should receive when changing jobs.
A better approach is to determine your market value for the new role and compare it with your current compensation.
Don't start with "I want 30%"
Start with: "What should someone with my skills and experience earn in this role?"
For example, on a current CTC of ₹10 LPA with a market value of ₹13–15 LPA for the target role, your expected compensation might be around ₹14 LPA — a hike of roughly 40%. The percentage is an outcome, not the starting point.
Factors that can increase your negotiating power
- Specialised skills
- Strong performance
- High-demand role
- Relevant experience
- Leadership experience
- Strong competing offer
- Directly relevant achievements
- Strong interview performance
Calculate your hike
Hike % = (New CTC − Current CTC) ÷ Current CTC × 100
₹14 LPA against ₹10 LPA is a 40% increase. But also calculate the fixed compensation separately.
Compare CTC hike and fixed-pay hike side by side.
Open the Salary Hike CalculatorWhat if HR asks for expected salary?
"I'm currently evaluating opportunities around ₹X–Y LPA based on the scope of the role and my experience. I'd be happy to discuss the overall package."
This keeps you from anchoring yourself too low.
Don't optimise for percentage
A 50% hike on ₹6 LPA gives you ₹9 LPA. A 20% hike on ₹20 LPA gives you ₹24 LPA. Your absolute compensation and future career trajectory matter more than the headline percentage.
